5 Essential Records from 2007

A little list, since it was a good January…feel free to remind me what I’ve forgotten.

  1. Ripperton-10a (Liebe Detail)
  2. Estroe-Driven (Connaisseur)
  3. Lee Jones-There Comes A Time (Prins Thomas Mix) (Aus Music)
  4. Cortney Tidwell-Don’t Let Stars…(Ewan Pearson Mix)
  5. Jesse Somfay-Small Pebbled Forest (Archipel)

At the moment I really can’t get enough of the Jesse Somfay and the Estroe tracks from that list. After being away for the last few days at a family funeral, I put on one of my radio shows which begins with “Small Pebbled Forest”, and couldn’t help but feel there’s a religious feel to those booming almost brass like synths in the chorus. It’s like Legend of Zelda on some bombastic church service tip (on which point, does anyone think at funerals or similar the church organist is just improvising? One sad chord after another? They have at least 30 seconds to decide what mournful drone to unleash next, sometimes it’s like their hands are just falling into different positions. It’s like very very slow free jazz!) If you’re feeling this one, check out Somfay’s album “Of Ancestral Infernos and Lysergy”.

I must also mention Estroe’s “Driven” , which continues a brilliant streak for Connaisseur, a label which just keeps on producing great house music in its own style. There’s a Jamie Jones mix on the flip which is very good but the original is even better, if that list was in any order I’d put “Driven” at number 1. It’s an amazing piece of house music, and am I wrong, or even blasphemous, to say it reminds me of Sasha and Emerson’s “Scorchio”? Check it out on Connaisseur’s great website.

is Driven the one that i really like? i can’t remember what you said it was. It would make sense though, i’ve always been fond of Scorchio. aaaaaah cream anthems!

trying t get my hands on the scorchio replica… would be lovely if it were even remotely similar! think that song is one of the most underrated ever.

isn’t the Somfay quite a bit older? or did it get rereleased… well, whatever. love it.

I thought the album came out early this year…tho I bought it in Beatport so it’s possible they didn’t get it for a while after the release

aye, the album is new. a different mix of the track got released on an Archipel 12″ last February, hence the confusion. (I think it’s on Vath’s Sound of the Seventh Season too)

    for comparison. more acid trails.

Weird..that one is quite different, more like a dance track I guess, it’s good too.
