Chemical Brothers New Single…
I really think this is awful, it sounds like bad funky house. What’s more it has some clown called Ali Love singing “I seen the funk electric” over it. It seems Ali Love is, according to my Googling, a “London souldiscofunkster”. And yes he is white, how did you guess?
What is it that makes “funk” the last refuge of the fading dance act or the horrendous breakbeat duo trying to make an album? Or at least, some nebulous conceptual idea of “funk”? Can’t the Chemical Brothers even do like rock bands and reproduce their old work? Even the glossy indie of “Push The Button” would be far, far better than this. Perhaps the problem is that these big behemoths like Fatboy Slim and the Chemical Brothers come from a dance music past when people cared about “funk”.
Is anyone gonna rep for “Do It Again”? I could actually handle the Booka Shade biting Battleweapon they released recently, I could imagine people liking it, but this isn’t even close to that. The vocal is just utterly horrible, and typically for a dance record made in 2007 that talks about “funk”, this is completely lumpen and doesn’t make you want to dance.
I’d personally be happy if no dance record ever referenced or attempted to sound like Prince again, since Prince style funkiness done by British dance dudes is about the worst type dance music you can imagine, though it’s still attempted surprisingly often.
A quick look at Ali’s Myspace shows he has a song called “Rock N Roll Control”. If you check out his tracks you might agree that he is well used to making disposable and meaningless radio dance. To me that’s what this single is, “radio dance”, it doesn’t grab you or make you want to listen in the slightest and keeps jibbering on about “funk” in case you notice it’s crap.
PS: You’ve no idea how much I wanted to title this post “Comical Brothers”, but I figured it was better to get the info across.

There is no doubt in my mind that this album is gonna be terrible. Push the button was a sign they were past it. Rehashing their earlier work, recycling, bringing in new typical guests. It’s like they’re now a travelling indie X-factor show. oooh the Klaxons feature! what a surprise!
As much as i love their old records, It’s getting pretty tasteless.

not really…since they are making songs it’s a little different. I guess some minimal house is Prince influenced, but it’s more British producers “bringing the funk” that gets me.

I kinda really liked Out Of Control and the stuff on that album at the time, which was a surprise, because even then they were stretching their longevity/integrity. It’s a pity alright that it’s ended up like this though.

I liked that album too, and I liked “Come With Us” quite a bit too, in fact I reckon Come With Us might be their best record.
So yeah, it is a shame.

I think the album ‘Surrender’ is really under-rated. There’s a track named ‘Sunshine Underground’ which just blows me away.
Dig your own hole and Exit Planet dust are classics and still really good.
I was brought up on their music so i might be a bit biased about their early material.

the new single is pretty poo alright. its just what happens most artists who are very successful, they go to seed and get out of touch, obviously there are exceptions but they are few and far between.

Your right it sounds like a very bad Basement Jaxx record.
And it seems now that the Chemicals have critically dug their own hole!!
