Hits are Missed

Am I having a memory block or have there not been too many smashes yet this year? Maybe there never are before the summer. On the other hand, I’m a little disconnected from clubbing and clubs, sadly, so perhaps it’s just that I’m not picking up on the big crossover records!
Though I have been DJing at young peoples “nightclubs” at least once a month and I can’t think of any one record I’ve really played every time, apart from Audion’s “I Gave You Away”. (and some floorworker DJ favourite type records like Shyza Minelli’s “Set The Limit”)
Although the latter causes chaos when played, I’m not sure it’s too memorable for the floating voters who light the fuse and make small records become big ones. In fact I’m surprised how small a ripple it caused generally, when most DJs I know think it’s better than “Mouth to Mouth”.
Other than that I guess the obvious hit this year is Carl Craig’s Faze Action remix, Redshape’s remix of Zander VT, and well, what else? Don’t get me wrong, I could list 50 brilliant records from 2007 so far, 100 maybe, just the anthems seem thin on the ground, for whatever they’re worth. Any of you clued up people want to correct me on this one?
Anyway, the point of this subject is to discuss Richard’s recent post which suggests Solomun’s “Feuervogel” on Diynamic could be this year’s “Rej” or “Body Language”. I played the Guido Schneider remix on the show last week, and was reserving the original for this week. Though I must say I didn’t initially consider the crossover potential of the tune, which on closer inspection does indeed seems vast. It has that same “German car ad” feel as “Body Language”.
If you’ve been checking Diynamic you’ll be used to the real sense of drama on display here. Speaking of which, Jackmate’s remix on Diynamic from last year is also pretty amazing orchestral house music, so check that too. Here’s Solomun/Stimming’s “Feuervogel“, but please, if you like this, go and buy some of the other 12s on the label from Beatport or Phonica or wherever. Every one so far is great and you won’t be disappointed, plus these guys are still small, so support them!

I think Basement Jaxx’s “Make Me Sweat” and Simian Mobile Disco’s “It’s The Beat” make for a pair of smashes. Maybe Thomas Bangalter’s edit of DJ Mehdi’s “Signature.”
Oh wait, no dude, Escort “A Bright New Life,” total smash.
Thanks for the Shyza tip

Maybe “Deserter” or its Four Tet remix. I could also see the new Lindstrom/Solale single, “Let’s Practise” getting abundant spins as well.

I played that at Backlash last week, as my last record. Really went down well.

On Smart Cats v Dumb Dogs and Transit, really liking them, but don’t know if they’ll achieve ‘Anthem of 07′ status.
Must check out that Four Tet Remix of Deserter, haven’t heard it. Mr. Audion is playing in Dublin tonight, his first time in Ireland I think. Can’t wait!
