Mount Pleasant

The feeling of night turning into morning is one I’m sure most of you are familiar with. Whether you’re in a house or outdoors or even in a club, sometimes records come along that seem to encapsulate that 5am feeling. And one side of the new Mountain People 12 is definitely a case in point.
The enigmatic Swiss label turned a few heads with a Serafin release earlier this year, but their third release, out just this week, is their best yet. The highlight for me (though it’s a close call between two brilliant tracks) is the confusingly titled “Mountain 004″. It’s got a really addictive, bouncey melody, like a slightly more Euro Kerri Chandler. That’s looped for the entire track, with little changes in emphasis making you want to hear that one riff over and over.
It reminds me of those parties where you end up sitting in someone’s living room and occasionally a track like this might come on a mix CD or someone might play it and it’s as if suddenly it’s ceased to be the night before and become the morning after. As if everyone’s brain needs a different sound to click into that related but not identical gear. (No, not that gear!) Check it out, I really love this record.
And if you do like it, please support Mountain People, and pick up the whole 12 or the other release. The B side on this one is an equally great, but very different track. A twisted piece of percussive house music in the style of Luciano or Villalobos. And the art too is worth spending money on, a perfect package for the weekend!
