Grand Prins

I went to see Prins Thomas play at Shock (see their blog) in the Pod on Sunday, and I enjoyed it quite a lot. He played a pretty strange mix of stuff but it was really interesting watching a DJ with so little connection to new music and enjoying it! I mean, I do consider myself open to weird and wonderful music that isn’t techno or house, the weirder the better really. I just seldom have a chance to really listen to as much different stuff as I’d like to.

It’s a strange skill to DJ the way he seems to, playing all sorts of tempos and styles of music, but never descending too far into ostentatious eclecticism either. Most of the time there was the right amount of anonymity and flow to the set, which was quite cool considering the wide range of styles being juggled.

He did play “Love Is In The Air” at one stage but it didn’t seem like irony, just another record that worked pretty well, though it did feel a bit like being in your local meat market “disco bar” or something! By the end of the night he’d veered away from disco and was playing some seemingly endless reggae remix of Chas Jankel’s disco hit “Glad To Know You”, which is due to come out on Tirk I think soon.

There was also some metal thrown in at some point. It was weird and interesting to see something very different from what I would normally go to and hear music quite different from what I play myself, Prins seems to have a really good musical aesthetic going on and balls of steel behind the decks, so I’d definitely recommend going to see him if you have a chance.

On a completely different matter, here and here are some recent RA reviews I’ve done, for those of you who’d like to read them!
