Oslo-ve

If you’re one of the podcast subscribers or have listened to some of the recent radio shows or mixes around here (this one or this one in particular) you may have noticed I’ve been playing “Gualia” and “Manipulation” by an artist called Johnny D quite a bit. They’re both from a recent release on Federico Molinari (in slightly too cool for school picture above) and Nekes‘ label, Oslo Records.
I really like the fusion of house and minimal going on with the Johnny D release, it’s a looser more disco styled mix of the two, so you can take that to mean I’m not talking about the American/German sound of Sascha Dive/Mountain People etc so much.
The latest Oslo release is by Guillaume and the Coutu Dumonts and it’s another really different and interesting 12, with all 3 tracks again being worth a purchase. I quite like this looser, dirtier, dare I even say funk influenced (I dare not say “funky” that’s for sure!) minimal sound that’s around at the moment.
I guess Matt John’s “Soulkaramba” is an example that many of you will have heard, there are really raw percussive tracks that suggest producers are doing slightly more straight forward and certainly shorter takes on Villalobos’s recent house styled tracks. Not boringly straightforward though!
Speaking about these hazy, almost hippyish minimal sound reminds me a little of this post from when this blog was hosted on Blogger. I guess this more balearic tropical side of minimal has never really gone away in the last year or so, perhaps it’s been around longer. In fact you could perhaps argue that Cadenza are permanently releasing this style of music.
Social Beings (Villalobos/Haze) “Free Your Mind” is another fine examples of what I’m talking about. As are all 3 tracks on the Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts release on Oslo. I also suspect that some of these tunes will appeal to fans of Prins Thomas and his many friends. See the stream below and decide for yourself. The other two tracks on the release are great too.
