Words and Sounds
Some of you may know of the Hamburg based distributor Word and Sound, who carry a huge portion of the labels I discuss here or play on the radio show. And some of you may also have been familiar with their small digital store Playwas (now defunct, so I won’t link to it).
Well, after a few months of what I understand was quite rigorous work (think, the training scenes in any of the “Rocky” films) they’ve relaunched their digital store as WhatPeoplePlay.com. It’s a larger operation than the old Playwas and is set to grow too. Anyone who used WAS’s old digital store will have been used to finding digital versions of tons of stuff you can’t get anywhere else except on vinyl, and nothing has changed in that regard.
I’m sure anyone who buys dance music digitally on a regular basis will feel there still are still plenty of records you want that aren’t available as mp3s, I know I find this to be the case, so the more stores the better. Plus with Word and Sound at the helm of this, I know there will be far less crap to wade through than on some other digital stores.
Anyway the reason I’m shamelessly plugging this new site, apart from the fact that I have always liked WAS, going back to when I worked in a store and would check their main site to get sound samples of new releases (still a great way to keep up with new music), is that I’ll be doing some writing for What People Play, and at some stage a podcast aswell.
The first of my weekly roundups, where I discuss 10 tracks or so that I recommend (complete with a photo which has led to me being branded “an Irish mod”) is up here. As I say a podcast is probably in the works for sometime in the future and WPP itself has only just begun so I’m sure they have plenty of ambitious plans too.
I really hope this roundup will be a worthwhile read for those of you that are interested in checking out the site and buying tracks there, and perhaps help to steer you to one or two records you mightn’t have found otherwise. Of course, if I’ve missed something myself feel free to let me know!

the site looks cool. the samples are way better quality/length than beatport and it seems like a nice interface to use. ive been a fan of many of the labels that w.a.s. have distributed over the last few years so this is great! oh yeah nice article too ronan!
