HIAF End of Year Chart 2 and 1
2. Radioslave-Bell Clap Dance (Rekids)

This is another late entry but for many I think it is Radioslave finally breaking out of that long string of remixes he did in the last 2 years or so. Sure, there was nothing explicitly wrong with them, but this track is so much more urgent and peaktime to me. I’ve been playing this since I got it and I intend to keep playing it. That’s what makes it an easy number 2.
1. Petre Inspirescu-Sakadat (Vinyl Club)

This hasn’t been discussed at length at all this year, and that’s a shame because with its undulating and utterly unpredictable array of sounds it is so distinct from other house and techno records. Around June, people began asking here about a record with an off time snare, and it turned out to be this.
The guy who plays after me at Raidío Na Life plays hard techno and electronica so our tastes seldom overlap. But when I played this and it began to unravel in the middle he looked at me and was like “what the fuck is this?”. I think it’s the breakdown that’s so distinctive. You know, that part of the track where it seems to challenge your brain to make sense of the sounds. Just a sliver of coherence is left, just enough to keep your mind demanding that the groove locks back in, just enough to make you think you can make some sort of rhythmic sense of what’s going on.
“Sakadat” is so distinctive and original, but it also is anthemic and an instant hit. If people can continue finding new ways to twist the groove like this then I’m pretty optimistic for next year.

I can’t say I agree with your number one. It was one of the most annoying tracks to me this year. I guess you get its charm or you don’t. Otherwise a great list (numbers 30-2)

I was one of them!!! Absolutely amazing track that drove me mad the first time i heard it. First time i heard it was at the End when agoria dropped it. It so unlike anything else i was hypnotised straight away. When Villalobos played it at Fabric 2 weeks and the whol;e crowd went mad i knew almost straight away that this track would be one of the greatest of the year.

After a while I finally started liking some of Pedro’s songs, but that one hasn’t clicked with me yet. Usually his songs relent and offer at least a snatch of melody here or there, whereas I find the depth of percussion tones still a bit dry. You’re dead on about it’s impact on the brain, though.

I always thought Trommelstunde did that snare trick better than Sakadat. Still, it’s a pretty good trick.
Great read, Ronan. Thanks.
