Black Strop
So it seems Ivan Smagghe cancelled his second scheduled appearance in a row for Mr Jones/Backlash in Dublin last night. I can’t help but feel a bit annoyed by this. I mean, I wasn’t going to go, I’m no longer involved with the night, but it’s just the principle of it.
DJs not bothering to turn up with 5 or 6 hours notice to a promoter is really out of order. Doing it once is forgivable, you assume there’s a good reason. Doing it twice is harder to forgive. While I assume Bodytonic who put on the gig can take the financial hit and the damage to their rep, Smagghe doesn’t know this for certain. Think of how badly you could screw a small midweek clubnight with this sort of behaviour.
Now maybe there’s a good reason, two good reasons, for both of these no shows. But if it not it’s shameful. I mean, don’t get me wrong. I’m not someone who judges a DJ based on whether they come back to your friend’s house after a gig, or give you free records, or have a laugh or are nice. None of those things matter if they play a good set, apart from rudeness being an annoyance. But not turning up is a different story.
So I thought I’d name and shame here to see if anyone around the world has had a similar experience. Or if any other DJs are guilty of this kind frequent absenteeism.

Sasha is notorious for not turning up to gigs except he doesn’t even tell the promoters he’s not turning up. He once missed his own birthday celebration gig in Space. A slot he’d been doing for near on ten years.

Hey all, nice site Ronan.
It never happened to me, but it comes to my mind each time i’m about to go to a great event. Must be a total shame.
Ricardo Villalobos do that a lot isn’t it?

not that it matters, since you could just press play on a precorded set and no-one would notice the difference (hides)

Jesse rose cancelled in Edinburgh on the day a while back because of a burst eardrum, apparently.

@tom/pipecock- I had planned to go to only one of these gig’s but this is irrelevant. The quality of the DJ does not come in the equation. The point is, each of the promoters were left in a shit situation as the DJ’s in question cancelled within a few hours.
