Pull Up A Chair

So what are you all listening to lately?
This isn’t a lame ploy for a big pile of comments, but since there are a certain few readers here I thought I’d ask, and learn something in the process, or maybe get some recommendations instead of ranting away with my own! Feel free to include any kind of music, or just techno, whichever you want. Also if you’re a lurker you can use this post to introduce yourself.
Books you’re reading is interesting too, even if it’s a little off topic.

hey ronan,
times are good for house and techno. 2008 is shaping up to be a great year for quality deep electronic music, but i’m sure this will be just a phase… on the other side of the spectrum, you have the harsh & noisy nu-rave stuff which just isn’t my thing, but it’s quite popular around here (porto/portugal). i wonder what the next bandwagon will be next year. oh well.
been playing:
oracy - rewound (mojuba 12″)
most mojuba stuff tends to be quite formulaic (specially the sven weisemann solo stuff, which is good, but kinda worn out imo). oracy on the other hand, whenever he releases a record, it just amazes me how he manages to pull it off so differently. this one is sounding like a darker version of the stuff on sistrum. very very good.
kawabata - persuasion (serafin remix) (drumpoet promo)
serafin applies the mountain people treatment to the upcoming lexx 12″ on drumpoet. a very simple, deep, repetitive and effective tool that’s pushing all my buttons. sounds amazing in a club system!
xdb - espac (sistrum 12″)
this was a big surprise for me. here i was thinking the guy was just one of the current million basic channel clones and then he puts out this. like old juan atkins meets the current house sound of sistrum/aesthetic audio. very very special and truly beautiful house music that makes you want to close your eyes and drift away.
johnny d - orbitalife (oslo promo)
producer du jour puts out another gem of a dancefloor record. that a-side, it grows and grows and grows and then that soulful vocal of his kicks in and you just want to grab the hand of the person dancing next to you and start jumping around
still feeling his ‘deja vu’ track a lot too. let’s see how he manages to surprise us this year.
mix-wise, here’s one it’s been on constant play around here:
• tobias. • play my tape • podcast •
“I did this mix to keep remembering a very special time in the year 2003. Each song fits in a mysterious way to the steps i went through.”

The past few weeks have been insanely hectic for me at work so I haven’t had the time required to listen to or read about any new music in comfort. I’d usually find/buy new music via a computer so when you work with one all week and are busy you need to stay away from them during limited spare time! One of the unforeseen drawbacks of becoming reliant on a computer as weapon of choice when it comes to musical discovery and purchase I guess.
Recently finished reading “Stumbling On Happiness” by Daniel Gilbert. I really enjoyed this. The title sounds like something to avoid but it’s not self help at all. It’s a cognitive science based look at why humans are so poor at estimating what will make them happy in the future and why our memories are so flimsy when it comes to recalling personal experience or how we felt at a certain time in the past. It’s very insightful and exposes many of the counter-intuitive/productive ways the mind can work.
Currently reading R.F. Foster’s first volume of a biography of W.B. Yeats “A Life: The Apprentice Mage”. It can be quite heavy going at times but the level of detail is stunning if you’re prepared to stick with it. Foster is a historian by trade and needless to say Yeats lived in (and was at the centre of) probably the most interesting political and literary developments in modern Irish history. His biography thus reads like an extremely rich eyewitness account of such a fascinating time in Irish history.
There’s light at the end of the tunnel work wise so I’m really looking forward to getting a chance to catch up on all this good music I’ve missed recently.

Odd machine - we brought our friends has seen some late night airplay from me as well - probably not to a lot of people’s tastes. I’ve mentioned the Boxcutter album before (glyphic) -tremendous. I finally got around to listening to This Bliss by Pantha du Prince recently too.

my sister bought me the steve reich “phases” box set for christmas and it’s been on rotation at home since.
the third CD with New York Counterpoint and electric counterpoint is a highpoint.
i’ve also been mildly obsessed with Donnacha Costello’s Colourseries compilation.
enjoying the mix from the minimise website too.
i’ve actually only got back into listening to and buying techno after a hiatus of a few years- this blog and those of the people commenting have really contributed to that- it’s great to read conflicting opinions, robustly argued without the usual blogtacular sulking.
I bought the SL break “trombone” 12″ after it was recommended here and have become fascinated with it. It’s very moreish- one of those tunes you can listen to again and again and again.
Robert Wyatt’s Comicopera from last year is getting pretty heavy rotation on my long commute, it’s charming as is the Yeasayer album (all hour cymbals) which is surprising as I’m not normally a fan of these indie-bands-du-jour. It’s got real affection for the afrobeat it’s influenced by without robbing from it wholesale. The album is slightly too long but the first half hour is lovely.
My pal Drew records under the name Wounded Knee and I’d suggest him for anyone who enjoyed Person Pitch. He does looped vocals and tones using a very simple setup. His sound seems to change every few months with new elements being added or stripped back from the setup. He’s got lots of his back catalogue available for free download on www.myspace.com/iamwoundedknee and www.shazzblat.com
unfortunately his “ghost tape 1″ thing doesn’t seem to be there- it’s a 15 minute improvisation using only voice and delay. ghostly technoey echoey wonderfulness. I’ll see if he can put it back up or if I could post a link because it’s fantastic.
Books:
Just devoured “Brilliant Orange: the neurotic genius of Dutch Football” by David Winner which is one of the best football books I’ve ever read. Compulsive, quirky and very readable- he looks at dutch culture, art, architecture and politics to explain the factors which characterise the Dutch “system”. Can’t praise it highly enough, it’s about so much more than kicking a football.
For a bit of fun I read Clemmie by John D MacDonald which is the story of obsession in 50’s america. It’s all shagging and bourbon and hot women and broken hearts.
whoops. long comment!

New Kadebostan 10″ on Fenou, the new Clone Classic Cuts 12″ sampler, Linkwood - RIP, and the Kelley Polar and Hercules & Love Affair LPs.
Not sure if you’ve checked it out, but I’ve commented on recent bits over at TAPE (www.tape-club.com) like Lee Jones’ forthcoming ‘Aria’, the Bjorn Torske LP and other bits.

Thanks a lot. I must do more threads like this, it’s great to see new names posting and lots of good recommendations of stuff to listen to.

Hey Ronan
Some of the stuff I like to play these days…
The Rhadoo EP on Cadenza
Tampopo - Helicopters got Cameras (Tobias Mix) - Curle
Xtrak - Unreflect - Yore
Losoul - Westsidehorn - Playhouse
Kerri Chandler - Pong (Drum Mix) - Deeply Rooted House
The Workshop 4 EP
EQD - Equalized
The Mole - Baby you’re the one - Wagon Repair
And lately I’ve been (re)discovering…
The Persuader - What is the Time, Mr. Templar? - Svek.
A percussive evergreen from the hey-day of Svek label before Jesper Dahlbäck electrocuted his productions.
Gemini: Swimmin’ wit’ the Sharks (Classic)
I love this guy. Too bad he ended up so badly.
Fantastic groove, a total singalong thing.
Move D. meets Ro 70: Untitled A - Source
Ultradeep late 90s acidic minimalist techno.
A collaboration with Roman Flügel.
Cheers, Björn
